Bremec, C.; Lasta, M.L.; Lucifora, L.O.; Valero, J..
The faunistic composition of invertebrate by-catch associated with the Patagonian scallop Zygochlamys patagonica fishery before its development were studied. Analyzed material was sampled from catches performed in different beds with the F/V Erin Bruce during 1995, all of them in undisturbed areas, in the Argentine continental shelf. Macrofaunal species were identified, weighted and percentages of presence estimated. By-catch invertebrate species were determined for every bed, mainly invertebrates without present commercial value. This baseline information is considered a useful tool to detect structural changes in the benthic communities in relation to the conservation of possible substrates of recruitment of this resource and to estimate the evolution of...

Schejter, L..
The different aspects of the benthic assemblages at the Patagonian scallop beds in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) were studied. The Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) is a commercial species distributed in the Magellanic Biogeographic Province, and has been commercially exploited since 1996. Temporal and spatial studies were performed in the community composition between 39°50'S and 36°15'S, and between 1998 and 2003, concluding that the species association was persistent after more than 7 years of trawling activities. Species composition in an exclusion area (closed to scallop fishing) did not differ from surrounding fished areas during the studied period, showing only a higher scallop biomass. ABC curves showed a pattern coincident with a non...

Bogazzi, E..
Several attributes of populations of sedentary organisms differentiate benthic fisheries from those approached by the classic theory, inspired by fin-fisheries. The assessment and management of sedentary resources require the application of non-conventional methodological tools. Understanding the fishing process, in particular, is central to the analysis and management of those fisheries. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the fishing process and its impact on stocks of the Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) fishery. Data and information utilized included: (i) historical data from commercial vessels and experimental fishing; (ii) positional, catch and effort data, and additional information corresponding to fleet activity between 1995...

Bremec, C.; Marecos, A.; Schejter, L.; Lasta, M.L..
Technical guide to identify epibenthic invertebrates associated to Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica)beds in the Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. A catalogue of the invertebrate species that conform the by-catch of the Patagonian scallop fishery is presented and a descriptive technical note with basic information on the organisms considered is included.

Pesquerías de bivalvos: mejillón, vieiras (tehuelche y patagónica) y otras especies OceanDocs
Ciocco, N.F.; Lasta, M.L.; Bremec, C..
Fisheries of the mussel Mytilus edulis platensis, the tehuelche scallop Aequipecten tehuelchus and Patagonian scallop Zygochlamys patagonica are described. Information about catches of purple clam Amiantis purpurata in San Matias Gulf, mussel Aulacomya ater ater and hard shell clam Ameghinomya antiqua in San José Gulf is also presented. Regarding mytilus fishery, it is observed that the main catches were situated in Faro Querandí and Quequén beds (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), where high densities occured in an area between 35 and 60 m depths. Those beds were exploited until the production was no more commercially interesting. The tehuelche scallop is a very well known resource from the Argentine Sea and its fisheries from San Matías and San José...

Mauna, A.C..
CDATA[Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) is a suspension feeder bivalve that presents the highest concentrations of recruits associated to the shelf-break front; but the temporal pattern of these recruitments have not been described in detail. Given the importance of recruitments for the development of the fishery and the population dynamics of the resource, in this report space-time distribution [catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of specimens =<, 15 mm, age 0+] is described and comparison between years and the Management Units (MU) 1.2 and 2 carried out. The study area corresponds to the North Management Sector of the patagonian scallop fishery (38º S-39º 30’ S, 55º W-56º W), Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic Ocean. The null hypothesis on recruitment...

OceanDocs
Lasta, M.L.; Hernandez, D.R.; Bogazzi, E.; Burgos, G.; Valero, J.; Lucifora, L.O..
To evaluate absolute biomass, a research cruise was conducted on three scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica)beds (38°S-56°W, September 1998). The estimated bed surface was 1,162 nm(2). Sampling stations were regularly spaced at 5 nm intervals. A total of 118 trawls were performed with a non-selective dredge 2,5 m wide (efficiency 16-21. ). Trawls duration and speed were 10 minutes and 3 nm.h(-1)respectively. Samples were taken to estimate total and commercial (greater or equal than 55 mm total height)scallop weight and size frequency distribution. Coefficients of variation (CV)of the estimated biomass were calculated for each bed using geoestatistical techniques and a simple random sampling alternative with the same number of samples. The CVs for total scallop...

OceanDocs
Lasta, M.L.; Bremec, C..
Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King Broderip, 1832): A new fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. We present preliminary information on a new fishery of patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica King Broderip, 1832) in the Argentine Continental Shelf. A research program was conducted jointly by INIDEP and a fishing company during 1995 with the F/V Erin Bruce. The vessel, fishing equipment and processing on board are described. A total of 7235 fishing tows were performed during 246 days at sea. Seven new beds were located between 38º 50' S and 42º 30' S, along the 100-m isobath. Beds are discrete. Differences in the size structure by bed suggest that recruitment consists of sporadic pulses. Proportion of scallops and invertebrate by-catch...
